Discussion Question #Three

Candide and Cacambo decide to leave Eldorado because it is "false" to put it into the simplest of terms. Eldorado is simply a metaphor for what they want but will never reach, partly because it may not even exist. For various decades and centuries, Eldorado has been synonymous with a type of "Holy Grail". We all search for it, but only the select few ever grasp hands with Destiny.
The reason I say Eldorado is false is because I see it as a "false Garden of Eden" symbolization. Voltaire tries to get it through our heads that hard work and dedication are the only way in this life. That is the reason for all the gardens throughout the book.
Voltaire believed in blue collar work and in a bucolic type atmosphere.
