Voltaire is suggesting what many
people think love isn’t. Beauty and character does matter when it comes to
romantic love according to Voltaire. Once love has taken place, there is no way
of getting out of it. For as much as ugly a person may get, you may be very disappointed
but love will still exist there. The love may change and you may lose that
spark that once united one with another, but feelings will still be there no
matter what. Attraction will be the only changing factor.
I am guessing the discussion was for question 12 not 2. Candide did believe to love Cunegonde, but in reality he was fooled by her beauty which drove him to his miseries. Sure he stated, in reason that he would continue to love her because he is an "honest man". But in reality true love never existed between them. Candide only stayed with Miss Cunegonde after she turned ugly because he felt as if it was his obligation (since he traveled far and wide for her).
